What to do about the Mountain Pine Beetle today?
Verbenone is the treatment of choice for property owners who want to protect their high value trees and acreage but don't want to risk wildlife and run-off of contaminants. It is tried and true - tested for many years in the forests of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, British Columbia - all up and down the Rockies. The US Forest Service, BLM, and the National Park Services have purchased thousands of treatments and continue to purchase more each year.
The pheromone comes in tiny pouches (seen below) that you tack to the trunk of the susceptible tree in the early summer. It tricks the beetles into continuing to fly, looking for more fruitful acreage than yours. Many will die before finding suitable habitats.

The US Bureau of Land Management has chosen Verbenone to protect the public forests in 2012. They have purchased 30,000 pouches to help protect our mountain states. The US Forest Service has purchased 65,000 pouches.
Simple Verbenone Application Directions: It's easy to use Verbenone. It takes just a ladder and a hammer. (For very tall application, See the HUNDLE HAMMER: an easy-to-make extension hammer).
Deploy the pouches before the initial flight of the beetles. Pine Beetles know when to hatch and take flight by temperature. In mountain States, deploy between June 15 to July 1 for flight time of July 1-Sept 15. In lower and warmer elevations, put them out a little bit sooner to catch the flight of early hatchlings.
Don't purchase less than you need. Un-opened foil envelopes of pouch dispensers may be kept from season to season if stored in a cool, dry area below 32°. Or place pouches in a sealed container such as a sealed empty paint can with the lid tightly hammered down or a tightly sealed mason jar and in a freezer. ALWAYS keep the label with stored product.
