What to do about the Mountain Pine Beetle today?
Verbenone is the treatment of choice for property owners who want to protect their high value trees and acreage but don't want to risk wildlife and run-off of contaminants. It is tried and true - tested for many years in the forests of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, British Columbia - all up and down the Rockies. The US Forest Service, BLM, and the National Park Services have purchased thousands of treatments and continue to purchase more each year.
The pheromone comes in tiny pouches (seen below) that you tack to the trunk of the susceptible tree in the early summer. It tricks the beetles into continuing to fly, looking for more fruitful acreage than yours. Many will die before finding suitable habitats.
It's easy and effective. In the past it has cost more than spraying poisons. Not now! Our volume purchasing power has brought the prices down to an all-time low!

The US Bureau of Land Management has chosen BeetleBlock to protect the public forests in 2010. They have purchased 30,000 pouches to help protect our mountain states.
BeetleBlock Verbenone Manufacturer's Directions: A repellent pheromone product for control of the mountain pine beetle. Beetle Block dispensers are used to prevent or reduce bark beetle attack on susceptible trees or stands containing a significant portion of pine trees. BeetleBlock dispensers emit an anti-aggregation pheromone that is repellent to Mountain Pine Beetles. Place dispenser 6-12 feet above the ground on the north face of susceptible trees. For acreage, place in a grid pattern at a minimum of 20 dispensers/ acre. Maximum allowable dose is 60 dispensers /acre
Deploy before initial flight - deploy between June 1 to July 1 for flight time of July 1-Sept 15.
Don't purchase less than you need. Un-opened foil envelopes of pouch dispensers may be kept from season to season if stored in a cool, dry area below 32°. Or place pouches in a sealed container such as a sealed empty paint can with the lid tightly hammered down or a tightly sealed mason jar and in a freezer. ALWAYS keep the label with stored product.
