Verbenone Instructions & Ingredients

Verbenone is the treatment of choice for property owners who want to protect their high value trees and acreage but don't want to risk wildlife and run-off of contaminants. It is tried and true - tested for many years in the forests of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, British Columbia - all up and down the Rockies. The US Bureau of Land Management and the US Forest Service have purchased nearly 100,000 treatments for 2010.

The pheromone comes in tiny pouches that you tack to the trunk of the susceptible tree in the early summer. It tricks the beetles into continuing to fly, looking for more fruitful acreage than yours. Many will die before finding suitable habitats.

It's easy and effective. In the past it has cost more than spraying poisons. Not now! Our volume purchasing power has brought the prices down to an all-time low!

Now, Verbenone is easy. Effective. AND less expensive than poison!

Application Directions

A REPELLENT PHEROMONE PRODUCT FOR CONTROL OF THE MOUNTAIN PINE BEETLE. (Dendroctonus Ponderosae), WESTERN PINE BEETLE (Dendroctonus brevicomus), AND SOUTHERN PINE BEETLE (Dendroctonus frontalis). This product is for Forestry use only.
Prior to use, open storage bag in a well-ventilated area and allow any accumulated vapor to vent

Host Tree Stands: Stand and fallen pine trees, including: limber, loblolly, lodge-pole, pinyon, ponderosa, shortleaf, Virginia, western whitepine, white, whitebark, or pine trees of any species. Use on trees in forests; municipal and shade tree areas, recreational areas such as campgrounds, golf courses, parks and parkways; ornamental and shade tree plantings; suburban areas; and rights of way and other easements

Pests: Verbenone is an antiaggregation pheromone for the mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae), the southern pine beetls (Dendroctonus frontalis), the western pine beetles, (Dendroctonus brevicomis), and other bark beetles. Verbenone Pouches deter attacks in tree stands and protect suceptible trees.

Application Placement: In tree stands, place in a grid pattern by stapling individual pouches 6-12 feet above the ground on the north face of suceptible trees. Use a minimum of 20 pouches per acre, and use a more concentrated application at the pressured boundaries to the acreage.

The product is most efficacious when less than 15% of mature pines are currently attacked and when combined with direct control tactics e.g. sanitation harvesting or felling and burning of infested trees. If, after Verbenone application, isolated trees within the area are still attacked, it is imperative that they be cut and disposed of properly, as they will provide the beetle nurseries for the next onslaught. Using this procedure will keep the number of trees infested to a minimum (always less than 15%) and allow the product to continue working against mass attack.

Usual verbenone dispersal range is approximately 10 feet around the tree and 10' above and below the pouch, most concentrated in the direction of the prevailing breeze. Dispersal is fastest in warmer temperatures, and the product is sensitive to sunlight. Best placed on the shady side of the tree (north) and upwind. Studies show that most attacks occur on the north side of the tree.

For individual living trees, staple one pouch at maximum reach from the ground on the north face or two pouches, one at 6 feet and one at 12 above the ground on the north face.

Timing:

BeetleBlock Application: Apply end May / early June for mountain pine beetle. Lower elevations peak a little earlier due to warmer weather earlier in the summer season. The expected life span of the pouch is 100 - 130 days, weather dependent. Trees 6-9 inches in diameter usually require only one pouch. Very large diameter trees may require a 2nd pouch placed 6-10 feet higher on the north face of the tree. The need is to cover the whole trunk until it has diminished to about 6" in diameter. Each pouch covers an area of approximately 10' in diameter.

Treatment is usually site-specific, depending on such factors as proximity, size and rate of growth of an infestation, stand age and composition, aspect elevation, altitude, climate, local weather and integration with other control tactics. Inexperienced users are advised to seek guidance from a professional forest entomolotist.

Store in the foil-sealed storage bag in a cold, dry place. To store from season to season, store below 32 degrees F (or 0 degreesC) or as cold as possible. If pouches are stored outside of their foil package in a sealed container, ALWAYS keep the label with the stored products.
